Part of why I write is because I have a need to get stories out of my head. For that, I have achieved "done" when the first draft is completed. (But when something wants to be a graphic novel, writing the script does not count as "done" I discovered, which was very disconcerting to me the first time it happened.) So that's the "done" I usually use, and I might have made the same mistake myself, if I had bumped into you in real life.
But the other "done" I use is "I got this polished up to the point where I convinced myself it was worth submitting and submitted it", so I'd like to think I'd ask, rather than assuming.
I'll confess, though, when it comes to talking about writing to people at cons... I've stopped doing that much. I'm hardly a newbie writer anymore, but neither am I an established pro. I don't feel like I fit into the conversational landscape anymore.
