Well, the above is only partially a rant at people who make that assumption (although yes, it would've been nice if someone had asked rather than assuming); it's also a reminder to myself that that assumption is out there, and I need to have a response to it ready if I want to continue the conversation meaningfully past that point.
I'm hardly a newbie writer anymore, but neither am I an established pro. I don't feel like I fit into the conversational landscape anymore.
I hear you on that. There's plenty of venues out there for newbies, from beginner-level convention panels to advice sites to forums, and I've seen indications that there's quite a network among writers who've published their first book. But there does seem to be a gap where intermediate writers are concerned. For people who know better than to make dumb-newbie mistakes, who've put in time in the trenches but don't have a signed contract to show for it yet, there's a real shortage of resources, of support formal and informal.
