If it's a disease, what's the cure?
Thursday, May 5th, 2011 02:13 pmAfter a marathon bout of queryitis and the assistance of the inestimable
signeh, I've finally got something that appears to be a usable query summary.
So I ask you, oh f-list: Would you buy this book?
Dear [Agentname],
I am seeking representation for my 65,000 word espionage novel HIGHWAY OF MIRRORS.
Elle Davis used to work for an intelligence agency -- now she's on the run from it. Her former boss, Karl Eichmeyer, has devised a clandestine training program to create the perfect agent, conditioned to unbreakable loyalty, and Elle's teenage daughter Haley is the ideal candidate to prove its effectiveness. Eichmeyer is willing to pursue them across the country to bring the girl under his influence. But the biggest threat to their freedom isn't Eichmeyer; it's James, Elle's beloved husband, fellow agent, and Eichmeyer's strongest supporter.
When an old friend pulls Elle back into the conflicting alliances of the Department's internal politics, she knows it's going to be hard to protect Haley. She's not prepared for Haley taking matters into her own hands. Elle has to follow her daughter into Eichmeyer's stronghold, effectively placing herself under house arrest while trying to shield Haley from Eichmeyer's manipulations. Trying to get evidence to use against Eichmeyer, Elle finds her every move thwarted. She finally has no choice but to use Haley as an agent to get what she needs to bring Eichmeyer down. As Haley digs ever deeper into Eichmeyer's shady past, success -- and even survival -- may depend on whether Elle can sway James' divided loyalties.
HIGHWAY OF MIRRORS is my debut novel. I would be pleased to send sample chapters or the full manuscript at your request. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
[me]
