What a discouraging day yesterday. The first agent I targeted wants stuff I don't have, and that I know from experience won't be easy to produce. The second has closed the office to queries since I originally bookmarked him. And #3 got such bad reviews for unresponsiveness on Absolute Write that I crossed her off entirely.
I did eventually list a couple of agents who I like the sound of and who have no immediate obstacles to me querying them. Haven't sent anything yet, because by that point it was well past midnight and I was far too tired to reliably proofread an email; that's top of today's to-do list. (While waiting to hear from the mechanic, so it's not like I'd be having a fun day anyway.)
I think I am going to have to revise my apparently wildly optimistic schedule for how many agents I can query in how much time. Even cursory research into a given agent's preferences, reliability, and operating practices takes a lot of Googling, blog reading, and forum-scanning, and all that takes a surprising amount of time. And that's without any additional material I may need to prepare.
I am beginning to suspect that "This wasn't supposed to be the hard part" is going to be my mantra for the entire process.
